How to estimate metal mass

  1. Pick steel, aluminum, copper, brass, or stainless. Densities are typical published values, not a heat-specific mill cert.
  2. Pick plate, round, or pipe, then the unit for every size, default millimeters.
  3. Enter length plus the sizes for that shape. Pipe wall cannot fill the outside diameter.
  4. Read volume in m³, mass in kg, and pounds. Confirm alloy density. Estimate only.

What this metal weight page computes

Mass is volume in cubic meters times a table density. Plate is a box. Round is a cylinder. Pipe is a hollow cylinder from outside diameter and wall. A generic mass-over-volume identity without a metal table is the density calculator.

How volume and mass are computed

Every size converts to meters (mm × 0.001, cm × 0.01, in × 0.0254, ft × 0.3048). Plate m³ = L × W × T. Round m³ = π (d/2)² L. Pipe m³ = π ((OD/2)² - (ID/2)²) L with ID = OD - 2 × wall. kg = m³ × ρ. Pounds divide kg by 0.45359237. If 2 × wall ≥ OD the page rejects the pipe.

Alloys, coatings, and mill certs

Carbon steel near 7850 kg/m³ is a handbook typical, not A36 versus 4140. Aluminum 2700 is near 6061, not a lithium alloy. Copper 8960 is near pure copper, not a brass already listed at 8500. Galvanizing, paint, and hollow bar with a different ID need another model. Not a mill certificate and not structural design.

Use cases

A plate drop, a round-bar drop, or a pipe stick before you ask a vendor. Not a crane lift plan by itself.

π times (outer radius squared minus inner radius squared) times length. Inner radius uses OD minus twice the wall.
Can the wall fill the pipe?
No. If twice the wall is at least the outside diameter, the page rejects the sizes.
Where do I compute density from a weighed sample?
Use the density calculator with mass and volume you already have.
Is this structural design?
