What this stud count covers
One straight wall run at a constant on-center spacing. Complex openings still need your extras judgment. Drywall sheets sit on drywall. Insulation batts sit on insulation. Board feet sit on board feet.
How studs are computed
Length and spacing convert to inches. spaces = ceil(lengthIn / spacingIn). studs = spaces + 1 + extras. Actual spacing redistributes length across the spaces. Spacing cannot exceed wall length.
16 in OC, 24 in OC, and steel studs
Wood and steel both use on-center math. Load-bearing walls and shear walls follow plans, not this count alone. Rebar grids for slabs sit on rebar.
Use cases
