What this pressure converter does

Pressure is force per area. The SI unit is the pascal: 1 Pa = 1 N/m². This form converts among pascals, kilopascals, bar, pound-force per square inch, the standard atmosphere (101325 Pa), and torr (1/760 of that atmosphere). One bar is exactly 100000 Pa, a round metric multiple that is close to, but not equal to, 1 atm.

Pressure factors

Values move into pascals, then out again. 1 kPa = 1000 Pa. 1 bar = 1e5 Pa. 1 atm = 101325 Pa by definition of the standard atmosphere. 1 torr = 101325/760 Pa, the conventional millimeter of mercury on this scale. PSI uses 6894.757293168 Pa per pound-force per square inch. The page treats the number you type as the same kind of pressure on both sides. It does not add 101325 Pa to turn gauge into absolute.

Gauge, absolute, and nearby units

Tire stickers and many gauges read gauge pressure (above local air). Absolute pressure includes the atmosphere. This converter does not know your altitude or the local millibar field, so it will not apply that offset. Torr and mmHg are close in the lab; this list uses torr as 101325/760 Pa. Bar is common on hydraulic spec sheets. kPa is common on vehicle placards outside the United States.
