Mulch Calculator

Bed volume for landscaping mulch. Depth is often 2 to 3 inches. Cubic yards divide cubic feet by 27. This is coverage, not a soil test.

How to estimate mulch coverage

  1. Enter bed length and width. Approximate curves as rectangles.
  2. Enter depth. Many beds use 2 to 3 inches of mulch.
  3. Set waste for extra bags or a bulk dump. Optional: density for tons.
  4. Read cubic feet, yards, and meters. Confirm with the landscape yard. Estimate only.

How mulch volume is computed

The same box product as other bulk materials: convert to feet, multiply, then apply waste. Cubic yards use 27 ft³. Optional tons need a density you type.

Mulch depth versus gravel or concrete

Mulch is organic cover at a shallow depth. Gravel is mineral coverage on the gravel calculator. Concrete is a pour on the concrete calculator. This page does not test soil.

Estimate only, not a soil test

Species, moisture, and bag size change coverage. A soil lab report is a different document. Area without depth is square footage. Not code approval.

Use cases

A shrub bed, a tree ring approximated as a rectangle, or converting bags when you know bag cubic feet as density elsewhere. Fine grading is not modeled.

Limits

Dimensions must be greater than 0. Waste stays from 0 to 50. Blank density skips tons. CZNull does not receive the numbers.

Mulch calculator questions

Does this page upload my numbers?
No. The formula runs in the page you opened. CZNull does not receive the values.
How deep should mulch be?
Many beds use 2 to 3 inches. You type the depth. This page does not prescribe it.
Is this a soil test?
No. It is volume for coverage. pH and nutrients need a lab.
How do I get tons?
Enter density in lb/ft³. Bulk mulch density varies widely. Ask the yard.
Is this structural design?
No. It is an estimate for landscaping cover.
Can I treat the result as official?
No. Fluff and settling change coverage. Use the page to check the arithmetic.
