What this asphalt tonnage covers
One flat area with one uniform thickness. Driveway edges and taper lifts need judgment. Sealer gallons sit on asphalt sealer. Base stone can start from gravel.
How tons are computed
ft³ = area × (thicknessIn / 12). tons = (ft³ × density) / 2000. Cubic yards divide ft³ by 27. Density must stay in a plausible lb/ft³ band near hot-mix values.
Hot mix, cold patch, and density
Plant mix tickets list density or yield. Cold patch bags are product-specific and often better counted from bag yield. Paver hardscape counts sit on pavers.
Use cases
A 1000 sq ft driveway at 3 inches and 145 lb/ft³. Comparing 2.5 versus 3 inch thickness on the same area. Not a paving contract.
