Deck Flooring Calculator

Deck area is length times width. Divide by board width times board length, apply waste from 0 to 40 percent, and round up. Gaps and picture-frame borders are omitted. Estimate only, not a permit, code check, or engineered design.

How to estimate deck boards

  1. Enter deck length and width in one unit.
  2. Enter board width and stock board length in that same unit.
  3. Set waste from 0 to 40 percent for cuts and cull.
  4. Read deck area, boards before waste, boards to buy, and an approximate linear feet figure.

What this deck board count covers

The field is a single rectangle. Boards are treated as face covers with no gap. Stair treads and picture-frame borders need a second pass. Rail gaps are a different job on the baluster calculator. Perimeter trim length is on linear feet.

How boards to buy are computed

area = length × width. face = boardWidth × boardLength. raw = area / face. buy = ceil(raw × (1 + waste/100)). Waste stays from 0 to 40. Units must match. Mixing feet and inches without converting will miscount.

Composite, wood, and waste

Composite and wood share the same face math. Hidden fasteners and groove profiles change install time, not this area ratio. Higher waste helps when many miters or short offcuts appear. Post footing volume sits on post hole.

Use cases

A 16 by 12 deck takeoff, or comparing 10% versus 15% waste on the same board stock. Not a joist layout.

Limits

No gap field, no border mode, and no stair mode. Estimate only, not a permit, code check, or engineered design. CZNull does not receive the sizes.

Deck flooring questions

Are board gaps included?
No. Boards are treated as covering the full area face to face.
What waste range is allowed?
0 to 40 percent, then the buy count rounds up.
Must board size use the same unit as the deck?
Yes. Convert inches to feet yourself if the deck is in feet.
Does this count joists?
No. It only estimates decking boards. Framing is separate.
Where do I count rail balusters?
Use the baluster calculator for clear spacing along a rail.
Is this a building permit?
No. It is an estimate only, not a permit, code check, or engineered design.
