How to calculate square footage

  1. Pick the unit that matches your tape: feet, inches, yards, meters, or centimeters.
  2. For one rectangle, enter length and width. Leave the rooms box empty.
  3. For several rooms, put each as length and width on its own line, such as 12 14, and skip the single pair.
  4. Read square feet, square meters, acres, and hectares. Estimate only. This is not a survey or code approval.

How floor area is summed

Each length and width converts to meters, then multiplies. Several lines add. Square feet divide m² by 0.09290304. Acres divide m² by 4046.8564224. Hectares divide m² by 10,000.

Square foot, acre, and room list

A square foot is an area unit. An acre is 43,560 ft². This page is rooms and rectangles, not a GIS polygon. Legal lot area is the land area calculator, which still is not a survey. Unit-only swaps: square feet to square meters.

Not a survey

Walls, closets, and stairs need judgment you apply before typing. Paint coverage is the paint calculator. Estimate only. This page does not certify floor area for a listing, a permit, or code approval.

Use cases

A bedroom takeoff, adding a hall as a second line, or converting a 12 by 10 ft room to square meters. L-shapes need two rectangles.

Limits

Each pair must be greater than 0. A rooms line needs two numbers. CZNull does not receive the numbers.

Square footage questions

Does this page upload my numbers?
No. The formula runs in the page you opened. CZNull does not receive the values.
Do extra rooms add to length and width?
No. If the rooms box has lines, only those rectangles are summed.
Is this a survey?
No. It is rectangle arithmetic. A surveyor is required for a legal area.
How do I enter 12 by 14 feet?
Unit feet, or a line 12 14 in the rooms box.
Does it include walls?
You type interior or exterior figures. The page does not guess finishes.
Can I treat the result as official?
No. Listings and codes use their own rules. This is an estimate, not code approval. Use the page to check the arithmetic.
