Lawn Mowing Calculator
Effective cutting width shrinks by overlap percent. Path length is area divided by that width. Time is path length over speed. Estimate only, not a permit, code check, or engineered design.

How to estimate mowing time
- Enter lawn area in square feet.
- Enter mower deck width and pick its unit (inches by default).
- Enter travel speed and pick mph, fpm, fps, or kph.
- Set overlap percent under 50, then read path length and time in hours and minutes.
Lawn mowing time
Area coverage path at effective width
| Effective width | mower width × (1 - overlap/100) |
|---|---|
| Path length | area / effective width (ft) |
| Time | path length / speed (as ft per hour) |
| Default width unit | Inches |
| Default speed unit | mph |
| Omitted | Turns, obstacles, bagging, and trimming |
What this mowing time covers
The model is a continuous path across a flat area. Headland turns, flower beds, and bag emptying are not timed. Seed pounds for the same yard sit on grass seed. Land area helpers sit on land area.
How time is computed
Mower width converts to feet. effectiveWidth = mowerWidthFt × (1 - overlap/100). pathLengthFt = area / effectiveWidth. Speed converts to feet per hour, then hours = pathLengthFt / speedFtPerHour. Overlap must stay under 50 percent.
Deck size, speed, and overlap
Walk-behind decks often sit near 21 inches. Zero-turn decks are wider and often faster. More overlap lengthens the path. Less overlap risks thin strips. Mulch volume for beds is on mulch.
Use cases
A 10000 sq ft lawn at 21 in and 3 mph with 10% overlap. Comparing two deck widths on the same yard. Not a crew bid sheet.
Limits
No slope penalty, no trailer load time, and no edging time. Estimate only, not a permit, code check, or engineered design. Nothing is uploaded.
