How density is computed

Mass converts to kilograms. Volume converts to cubic meters. Density is kg divided by m³. g/cm³ is that value over 1000. lb/ft³ uses 0.0624279606 times kg/m³.

Density versus specific gravity

Density has units. Specific gravity is a ratio to a reference, usually water. This page does not assume 1000 kg/m³ unless you do that division yourself. Convert mass on the mass converter and volume on the volume converter.

Use cases

A lab block, a packed sample, or a tank inventory when you already measured mass and volume. Buoyancy and compressibility are not modeled. Floor area jobs sit on square footage.
