How to convert wavelength and frequency

  1. Enter frequency in hertz, or leave it blank if you will enter wavelength.
  2. Enter wavelength in meters only when you want to solve frequency, or leave it blank.
  3. Keep c at 299792458 for light, or type a different speed such as sound in air.
  4. Read frequency, wavelength, and speed. The relation is c = f lambda. Nothing is uploaded.

What c = f lambda means

Wave speed equals frequency times wavelength. In vacuum for light, c is 299792458 m/s. The default frequency equals that c, so wavelength is 1 m. Leave frequency blank and type lambda to solve f = c / lambda.

Hertz, meters, and wave speed

Hertz is cycles per second. Wavelength is the distance between repeats. c is not always light: water waves and sound use other speeds. This page does not convert RPM by itself. Use the frequency converter for hertz and RPM.

How this page solves

Enter frequency, or wavelength, or both. If both are present, wavelength is recomputed as c / f. Speed must be greater than 0. The arithmetic stays in this tab.

Wavelength and frequency questions

Does this page upload frequency?
No. c = f lambda runs in the page you opened. CZNull does not receive the hertz.
Why is the default frequency 299792458?
It matches the default speed of light, so the sample wavelength is exactly 1 m.
Can I use this for sound?
Yes. Type the speed of sound in m/s in the c field, then enter f or lambda.
What is lambda?
Wavelength in meters. Leave it blank to solve it from frequency and speed.
Does this convert RPM to hertz?
No. Open the frequency converter for RPM and hertz. This page multiplies f and lambda.
Is this an FCC or Ofcom filing?
No. It is the wave relation only. Licensing is a separate process.
