How to estimate swimming calories

  1. Select kilograms or pounds.
  2. Enter body weight and time in the water.
  3. Pick leisure, moderate, or vigorous swimming.
  4. Read session kcal and the MET used.
  5. Use the general calories page for dry-land sports. Nothing is uploaded.

What swimming calories estimates

Pool and open-water sessions share the same MET × mass × time product. Intensity selects leisure, moderate, or vigorous swimming. Stroke type is not a separate field, so you map freestyle drills or hard sets into those three bands.

How swim calories are computed

kcal ≈ MET × body kg × hours. Leisure uses MET 6, moderate uses MET 8, vigorous uses MET 10. Rest at the wall still counts if you leave it inside the minutes you type.

Swim MET and related jobs

Entities include swim MET, water session duration, and kcal. Cross-training lists live on calories burned. Cycling days sit on biking calories. Daily energy sits on TDEE.

Use cases

Sketching burn for a masters workout versus an easy lap swim. Logging aqua days without a chest strap. Teaching how water intensity still uses the same MET product. Not a swim-meet fueling chart.

Default numbers

At 70 kg for 45 minutes at MET 8, hours = 0.75, so kcal ≈ 8 × 70 × 0.75 = 420. Leisure MET 6 for the same slot is about 315 kcal.

Limits

Water temperature, current, and technique efficiency are omitted. Watches that use stroke rate will disagree. Informational only. See the disclaimer. CZNull does not receive swim logs.

Swimming calories questions

Does stroke type matter on this page?
Only through the intensity you choose. Butterfly sets usually belong in vigorous; easy backstroke often fits leisure.
Should I exclude rest intervals?
You can enter moving time only, or include rests if you want a whole-session average closer to moderate.
Why is swimming often higher MET than walking?
Table MET values for continuous swimming sit above casual walking. Exact values still vary by effort.
Open water versus pool?
The form does not split them. Rough water may feel harder; raise intensity if that matches your effort.
Can I compare with cycling?
Yes, run the same weight and minutes on the biking page and compare MET-driven totals side by side.
Is this medical advice for aquatic therapy?
No. Therapists set workloads with clinical goals this page does not model.
