What hiking calories covers

Trail days usually cost more energy than flat walking. This page offers a general hiking MET and a steeper or pack-loaded MET so you can match rough terrain without entering elevation profiles.

How hiking calories are built

kcal ≈ MET × body kg × hours. Standard hiking uses MET 6. Steep or pack hiking uses MET 7.8. Two hours is 2.0 in the hours term.

Trail effort and related tools

Entities include hiking MET, duration, and session kcal. Flat pavement walks sit on walking calories. The mixed sport menu is calories burned. Daily maintenance is TDEE.

Use cases

Planning snack needs for a half-day outing using a transparent formula. Comparing a gentle ridge walk with a loaded climb of similar clock time. Classroom demos of MET on uneven ground. Not a search-and-rescue guide.

Default numbers

At 70 kg for 120 minutes (2 hours) at MET 6, kcal ≈ 6 × 70 × 2 = 840. Steep / pack MET 7.8 for the same window is about 1092 kcal.

Limits

Altitude, bushwhacking, and exact pack kilograms are not fields. GPS apps that integrate grade will differ. Informational only. See the disclaimer. CZNull does not receive trail logs.

Hiking calories questions

When should I pick steep / pack?
Use it when the route has sustained climbs or you carry a meaningful pack. Casual rail-trails usually fit standard hiking.
Does body weight include the pack?
The form has one weight field. Some hikers add a rough pack estimate into body weight; others keep body weight alone and choose the steep preset.
How is this different from walking?
Hiking presets start at MET 6, above the casual walking MET 3.5 band on the walking page.
Should lunch breaks count?
Only if you want average burn across the whole outing. Enter moving time alone for a work-focused estimate.
Can I enter miles instead of minutes?
Not here. Convert your hike to clock minutes first.
Is this medical advice for heat illness?
No. Hydration and heat safety need field judgment and, when needed, clinicians.
