What NWS 2001 wind chill is

Wind chill is an equivalent temperature that describes how the air feels on exposed skin when wind strips heat. The United States National Weather Service adopted the 2001 fit. It is not the older 1945 Siple-Passel chart and not the Environment Canada index with different coefficients. Convert a Celsius air temperature on the temperature converter before you type °F here. How this page computes wind chill

WC = 35.74 + 0.6215 T - 35.75 v^0.16 + 0.4275 T v^0.16, with T in °F and v in mph. Wind cannot be negative. The page reports whether T ≤ 50 and v ≥ 3. Outside that window the number still appears because the algebra is defined, but NWS does not treat it as the operational index. Celsius is (WC - 32) × 5/9 of the wind-chill result, not of the air temperature.

Wind, skin, and related apparent temperatures

The index assumes a certain walking speed and face height. Calm air uses a floor near 3 mph in the official product. Sunshine, wet clothing, and frostbite times are separate NWS charts. This page does not print a frostbite clock. A city forecast needs a weather service, not this form.
