Megawatts to Kilowatts
Convert megawatts to kilowatts. One megawatt is 1000 kilowatts exactly. Mechanical horsepower is on the same list. This is power, not megawatt-hours of energy.

How to convert megawatts to kilowatts
- Enter the power in megawatts. The default is 1.
- Keep From as Megawatts and To as Kilowatts, or pick watts or mechanical horsepower.
- Read kilowatts. Multiply megawatts by 1000.
- Swap units to convert kilowatts back to megawatts. Horsepower uses 745.6998715822702 W per hp.
Megawatt
SI power prefix
| Megawatt | 1 MW = 1e6 W = 1000 kW |
|---|---|
| Kilowatt | 1 kW = 1000 W |
| Watt | 1 W = 1 J/s |
| Mechanical horsepower | 1 hp = 745.6998715822702 W |
| Energy cousin | MWh is energy on the energy converter, not here |
| Sibling | Kilowatts to horsepower for motors |
What megawatts to kilowatts does
This spoke locks power on megawatts to kilowatts. Both are SI prefixes on the watt. The factor is 1000 with no leftover. Plant and campus sheets quote MW. Building electrical sheets quote kW. Mechanical horsepower remains on the table so a generator figure can drop to hp without leaving the dimension.
Motors in kW and hp use kilowatts to horsepower and horsepower to kilowatts. The hub is power. Stored energy is energy.
Megawatt and kilowatt factor
kW = MW × 1000. MW = kW / 1000. W = MW × 1e6. hp = MW × 1e6 / 745.6998715822702. Swap exchanges From and To. A megawatt-hour is 1000 kWh of energy, which this page will not compute from a MW figure unless you also have time, and even then you want the energy converter plus a duration you supply elsewhere.
Plant MW versus motor kW
A 2 MW turbine is 2000 kW. That is a rate. How much energy it produces depends on hours of operation. Nameplate MW is not a bill. Watts to amps still needs volts if you want current from a kW load.
When to convert megawatts to kilowatts here
Scale a plant rating into kW, compare MW with mechanical hp, or drop to watts. Leave kWh on energy. Leave current on watts to amps.
What this page does not do
It does not convert energy (MWh). It does not multiply by hours. It is not a grid price. Input stays in this tab.
