MB to GB
Convert megabytes to gigabytes using SI prefixes: 1000 MB = 1 GB. Switch to mebibytes and gibibytes when you need 1024. This is storage size, not download time.

How to convert megabytes to gigabytes
- Enter the size in megabytes. The default is 1.
- Keep From as Megabytes (1000) and To as Gigabytes (1000) for SI. Pick Mebibytes or Gibibytes for 1024 prefixes.
- Read GB. Under the default labels, divide MB by 1000.
- Open the data hub if you need bits through gibibytes without this default pair. Swap reverses MB and GB.
Megabyte (SI)
Decimal data size
| SI megabyte | 1 MB = 1000 × 1000 bytes |
|---|---|
| SI gigabyte | 1 GB = 1000 MB = 1e9 bytes |
| Mebibyte | 1 MiB = 1024² bytes |
| Gibibyte | 1 GiB = 1024³ bytes |
| Byte | 8 bits |
| Bit | Canonical unit in the engine |
What MB to GB does
This spoke of the data engine defaults to SI decimal prefixes. Megabytes (1000) and Gigabytes (1000) mean 1000 MB = 1 GB = 10⁹ bytes. Disk makers usually advertise that decimal GB. Operating systems often display 1024-based units. On this page those are Kibibytes, Mebibytes, and Gibibytes, labelled with 1024.
The data hub is data. Estimate how long a file takes to transfer on download time. Other dimensions sit on the unit converter.
1000 versus 1024
Default: GB = MB / 1000. Bytes = MB × 1,000,000. Bits = bytes × 8. For 1024: 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes and 1 GiB = 1024 MiB. 1000 MB is 1 GB but only about 0.9313 GiB. Mixing MB with GiB without changing the labels is the usual source of "missing" disk space.
Drives, RAM, and bits
Hard drives and SSDs in shops usually use SI GB and TB. RAM modules and many OS file dialogs use MiB and GiB even when they still say MB. A byte is 8 bits on this page. Network rates in megabits per second are not a unit here; download time uses those rates as a separate calculator.
When to convert MB to GB here
Check whether a 700 MB file is 0.7 GB decimal, compare a 16 GB RAM kit in GiB, or move a bit count into bytes. Keep transfer-time math on download time.
What this page does not do
It does not read a disk. It does not convert megabits per second into a clock time by itself. Labels tell you 1000 versus 1024. Nothing is uploaded.
