What percent yield measures

Percent yield compares what you recovered to what stoichiometry said was possible. 8.5 g actual from 10 g theoretical is 85% yield.

Actual yield, theoretical yield, and limiting reagent

Theoretical yield comes from the balanced equation and the limiting reagent. Actual yield is what you weigh after workup. This page does not solve stoichiometry; it only divides the two yields you supply.

How the percent is formed

The engine divides actual by theoretical and multiplies by 100. Theoretical yield must be greater than zero. Actual yield cannot be negative.

No. Convert both to grams or both to moles before you enter them.
What does a yield over 100% mean?
Usually solvent or impurity in the product, or an incorrect theoretical value. True chemical yield cannot exceed 100% for a pure product.
Does this page find the limiting reagent?
No. Compute theoretical yield from stoichiometry first, then enter that number here.
Is percent yield the same as percent error?
No. Percent yield is actual over theoretical. Percent error compares an experimental value to an accepted true value with a different formula.
Why must theoretical yield be greater than zero?
Division by zero is undefined. A zero theoretical yield also means no product was predicted.
