How to calculate sunrise and sunset

  1. Pick a city, or leave Custom and type latitude and longitude in decimal degrees.
  2. Enter the civil date as YYYY-MM-DD. The default 2026-06-21 is the June solstice.
  3. For Custom, set the UTC offset in minutes. Named cities use that city's IANA zone for the date, including DST. New York in June is UTC-4.
  4. Read sunrise, sunset, solar noon, and day length. This is not weather. Nothing is uploaded.

What this sunrise page computes

The page uses the NOAA solar calculator with a zenith of 90.833 degrees. That zenith includes an average refraction and the sun's apparent radius. You get sunrise, sunset, solar noon, and day length for the date and coordinates you type.

Latitude, longitude, zenith, and offset

Latitude and longitude fix the place. A short city list sets coordinates and the IANA zone for New York, London, Tokyo, Sydney, Cairo, Sao Paulo, Nairobi, and Null Island. Custom still uses minutes from UTC that you type. Live zone clocks sit on the world clock. Moon illumination is moon phase.

How clock times are shown

The algorithm works in UTC minutes, then adds an offset. Named cities take that offset from the IANA zone on the civil date, so New York on 21 June is UTC-4 and Tokyo is UTC+9. Custom uses the default coordinates of New York and the default offset -240 minutes unless you change them.

Limits

Not weather. Hills, clouds, and official almanacs can differ by minutes. Polar night and midnight sun return a no-rise or no-set note. CZNull does not receive the coordinates. See the disclaimer.

Does this page upload my coordinates?
No. The NOAA formulas run in this tab. CZNull does not receive latitude or longitude.
What is zenith 90.833 degrees?
NOAA uses 90.833 degrees instead of 90 so the result includes average refraction and the sun's apparent radius.
Why is the default date 2026-06-21?
That is the June solstice in 2026, a long day in the northern hemisphere. Change it to any YYYY-MM-DD.
Do I still type lat and lng when I pick a city?
A named city overrides the coordinate fields. Use Custom when you want the typed lat and lng.
Is this a weather forecast?
No. The sun's geometric rise and set do not include clouds, haze, or temperature.
How do I match New York daylight time?
Pick New York. The page uses America/New_York, so June is UTC-4 and January is UTC-5. For Custom, type -240 for UTC-4 or -300 for UTC-5.
